What GBP actually does
When someone searches for "taco shop near me" in Las Cruces or "plumber Mesilla," Google shows three local businesses in a map – the "local map pack." Above the regular blue-link results. That map pack is powered almost entirely by Google Business Profile.
If you're not in the map pack, you're invisible to most local searchers. If you are, you'll get tap-to-call clicks, requests for directions, and website visits – for free.
The settings that matter
Most Las Cruces businesses with a GBP have it half-filled-out. Here's what actually moves the needle:
- Categories – your primary category should be the single most accurate match for your core service
- Services and products – list every job or item with a short description
- Service area – set every town you actually cover (Las Cruces, Mesilla, Sunland Park, Anthony, Chaparral, Hatch)
- Hours – including special hours for holidays
- Photos – at least 10, refreshed monthly, taken on a real phone
- Posts – short weekly updates about specials, projects, or news
- Q&A – seed it yourself with the questions customers actually ask
Reviews are oxygen
Recent reviews tell Google your business is alive and trusted. Aim for at least 5 new reviews a month, and respond to every single one – including the bad ones, politely.
Connect it to your website
Your GBP and your website should reinforce each other. The address, phone, and hours need to match exactly. Link the GBP to your homepage. On your homepage, link to your GBP. This back-and-forth tells Google you're a real, single business.
